We use data to run and personalize the learning service, process subscriptions, deliver optional reminders, provide AI features, and understand app performance. We do not sell personal data, show third-party ads, or use your data for cross-app advertising tracking.
Scope and who is responsible
This policy applies to the English News: Read & Learn mobile application (“English News,” “the app,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). The app is operated by the developer identified on its App Store product page. That developer is responsible for deciding how the app’s personal data is used and can be contacted at [email protected]. Apple’s own processing, including the App Store, Sign in with Apple, payments, speech recognition, and push delivery, is governed by Apple’s policies.
Information we collect
- Account and identifiers: an anonymous or registered app user ID, authentication/session tokens, account status, and—if you choose to link it—a Sign in with Apple identifier. The current Apple sign-in flow does not request your name or email address from Apple.
- Profile and onboarding choices: the display name you enter, selected age range, gender option, English level, placement-test score, level source, interests, and learning goals or preferences. These choices may be stored with your learning profile and used to personalize the app; selected onboarding choices may also be used for analytics.
- Learning activity: articles opened and completed, reading progress, saved and reviewed words, quiz answers and scores, spaced-repetition status, XP, streaks, achievements, daily journeys, goals, virtual items, and speaking-practice scores.
- AI content: messages you send in AI chat, recent conversation history needed to generate a reply, generated responses, and text submitted for translation or practice. Chat history may be stored with your account so it can be displayed later.
- Purchases: product identifiers, subscription status, entitlement status, purchase and restore events, and transaction/receipt metadata supplied by Apple and RevenueCat. Apple processes payment details; we do not receive your payment card or bank account information.
- Analytics and diagnostics: app opens, screens viewed, feature interactions, selected content or word identifiers, scores, purchase-flow events, error events, app-readiness information, device/operating-system and app-version information, timestamps, network information such as IP address, and an approximate country or region that an analytics provider may infer from that address.
- Notifications: if you enable remote reminders, an installation ID, Expo push token, platform, app version, time zone, country/region code derived from device locale, reminder time, permission state, and last-seen time.
- Support information: information you choose to include in a support or privacy request, such as issue details, app version, screenshots, and contact information.
Microphone and speech recognition
Speaking and pronunciation practice uses the microphone only after you grant permission and start the feature. Audio is processed through the device’s speech-recognition facilities to produce a transcript used for an on-screen score. English News does not upload or store your raw voice recording or speech transcript in its account database. We may record non-content analytics such as the exercise number, word count, and score. The operating-system provider may process audio under its own terms and device settings.
How we use information
- create and secure anonymous or Apple-linked accounts;
- save learning progress and synchronize it across supported devices;
- personalize articles, difficulty, reviews, goals, and recommendations;
- provide AI chat, translation, pronunciation, and practice features;
- confirm premium access, process purchases, and restore subscriptions;
- deliver reminders you request and remember notification preferences;
- measure feature use, diagnose failures, prevent abuse, and improve the app;
- respond to support, privacy, security, and legal requests; and
- comply with law and enforce the Terms of Use.
Legal bases where applicable
Depending on your location, we process information to perform our agreement with you, based on your consent (for example, optional microphone and notification access), for legitimate interests such as security, service improvement, and fraud prevention, and to comply with legal obligations. You may withdraw consent through device settings, but some optional features will then stop working.
Service providers and disclosures
We disclose only the information reasonably needed for these services:
- Our backend and hosting providers, including Supabase where used: authentication, databases, content delivery, account deletion, and secure server operations.
- RevenueCat: app user ID, device/technical information, Apple receipt and transaction information, subscription status, and entitlements used to manage premium access.
- PostHog (EU-hosted endpoint): account or analytics identifier, onboarding attributes, product interactions, purchase-flow events, and diagnostics used for product analytics. Screen recording is not enabled by our current app configuration.
- Google Gemini API: prompts, chat messages, recent conversation context, and text submitted for AI replies, translation, or practice. Do not include confidential, health, financial, or other sensitive personal information in AI chat.
- Expo Push Service and Apple Push Notification service: push token and notification payload needed to deliver optional remote notifications.
- Apple: Sign in with Apple, App Store subscriptions, refunds, speech recognition, and device services, each subject to Apple’s own terms and privacy practices.
We may also disclose information when required by law, to protect users or the service, to investigate abuse, or as part of a business transfer subject to appropriate protections.
No sale, third-party advertising, or cross-app tracking
English News does not sell personal information, does not display third-party advertising, and does not use collected data to track you across apps or websites owned by other companies for targeted advertising or advertising measurement. Product analytics is used to understand and improve English News itself.
Retention
Account, profile, learning progress, and saved chat history are generally kept while your account is active. Push-device records are kept while reminders are enabled or until they are no longer needed. Analytics, diagnostics, AI request data, and transaction records are retained according to operational needs, provider settings, security requirements, and applicable legal or accounting obligations. Backups and processor systems may take a limited additional period to complete deletion.
International processing
Our service providers may process information in the European Economic Area, the United States, Türkiye, or other locations where they operate. Where required, we rely on contractual or other lawful transfer safeguards. Privacy protections can differ between countries.
Security
We use HTTPS connections, access controls, authentication tokens, secure device storage for session information, and database authorization controls designed to protect information. No online system can guarantee absolute security. Keep your device and Apple account secure, and never send passwords or verification codes to support.
Your choices and privacy rights
- Notifications: change permission in iOS Settings and reminder preferences in the app.
- Microphone and speech recognition: change permissions in iOS Settings.
- Account deletion: open English News → Settings → Account & Security → Delete Account. This initiates permanent deletion of the app account and associated learning data, subject to limited legal, security, transaction, and backup retention.
- Apple-linked access: you may also manage apps using Sign in with Apple from your Apple Account settings.
- Access, correction, deletion, restriction, objection, and portability: these rights may be available depending on your location. Submit a request through the Support page or email [email protected] with the subject “Privacy Request.” We may need to verify the request.
Deleting the English News account does not cancel an App Store subscription. Manage or cancel subscriptions separately at Apple’s subscription management page.
Age limits and children
English News and its AI features are intended for adults aged 18 or older and are not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has used the app or provided information, contact us through the Support page so we can investigate and delete the information where required.
Changes and contact
We may update this policy when the app, providers, or legal requirements change. The effective date above shows the latest revision. Material changes will be communicated through the app or this page where appropriate. For privacy questions, requests, or complaints, use the English News Support page or email [email protected].
